Based on the differences to libmesode this functionality has been added.
It allows a library-user to set a callback for cases where the TLS stack
can't verify a received certificate and let the end-user decide what to
do.
examples/basic implements an example handler of said functionality.

verbosity levels.

Const variables in prototypes don't add much value, but make the code
larger and redundant. Remove these const keywords.
Note, this doesn't apply to pointers to const memory.
There are situations when applications need more predictable timed
handlers that don't depend on connection status. Other usecase of
the global handlers is to manage offline connections, for example,
reconnect after a disconnection.
Introduced UNUSED macro with cast to void in commoh.h for internal
use. Used cast to void directly in those files which do not
include common.h. Although this change doesn't fix semantic issues
with unused function parameters, it does explicitly mark all those
places, which might require attention in future.
@sjaeckel integrated clang-format with formal coding style. Run his
script and commit changes.
There are pros and cons of this commit.
Mixed coding style is a "broken window". A good single style simplifies
reading and writing code.
On the other hand, this is a big change which will lead to conflicts.
Legacy authentication can expose password in plaintext. Since this is
not widely used mechanism, disable it by default. It can be enabled back
with connection option XMPP_CONN_FLAG_LEGACY_AUTH.
xmpp_conn_t object can be reused with saving user's handlers.
However, saving system handlers can lead to a fail during connection
process. This is because old object may contain timed handlers for
missed features or other handlers that would handle incoming stanzas
incorrectly.
the C standard says that you're not allowed to cast a function pointer to
something else
6.3.2.3 §8:
A pointer to a function of one type may be converted to a pointer
to a function of another type and back again
This function is similar to xmpp_connect_client(), but doesn't perform
authentication. Instead, it calls user's connection handler immediately
after establishing the connection. Hence, user can implement own
authendication or registration procedures.
Such a "raw" connection can be useful when user interaction is required
(e.g. Data Forms in XEP-0077, OAuth2).
Store keepalive parameters in conn object. This allows call the function
with a disconnected conn. Also, the parameters are not cleared on
reconnect and applied once a socket is created.
xmpp_conn_set_flags() and xmpp_conn_get_flags() unify interface of
connection configuration.
This interface allows compile-time check of supported features or even
run-time check. Therefore, applications can be built with older
libstrophe which doesn't support some optional flags.
This pseudo-random number generator solves problem with
platform-independent generation of randomized nonces.
Current implementation uses weak entropy, especially when
kernel.randomize_va_space = 0. But it can be improved by
adding new sources to xmpp_rand_reseed().
New internal API introduced:

xmpp_rand_free
xmpp_rand
xmpp_rand_bytes
xmpp_rand_nonce
expat is still the default parser, but libxml2 can also be used
via an option to the configure script. New parsers can easily be
added by implementing a parser_foo.c that uses the interface defined
in parser.h.
Some other APIs, like xmpp_stanza_to_text, return a point that must be freed by the caller with this API.

problems between Win32 (with its broken implementation) and the standard
stdio API. Also fixed a bug in debug output where long messages got
truncated to 1023 chars, and in xmpp_stanza_to_text where long stanzas
got truncated by one character.
